Resource Details

The Center for Restorative Approaches at Neighborhood Housing Services helps people respond to destructive behavior in constructive ways. Our training & processes build relationships & support those most impacted by conflict and crime in finding ways to repair harm. NHS revitalizes communities by increasing home ownership & transforming vacant or substandard properties into homes. We improve quality of life through community development, leadership, education, outreach and collaboration.

Program Objective

NHS works to: build strong relationships between all members of the school community; build capacity for conflict resolution & accountability; model and teach processes for fun, honest, respectful and responsible interactions & communication; reduce suspensions & expulsions; replace punitive procedures with processes that focus on reparation; provide opportunities for those impacted by harmful behavior (victims) and those responsible for incidents to speak about what has happened, how people have been affected, and how to repair harm; Improve school cultures.

Program Description

We facilitate Community Conferences, Problem-Solving Circles, & Community Building Circles. During a Community Conference everyone impacted by a crime or harmful behavior talks together about what happened, how they were affected, and how to repair the harm. It serves as an alternative to suspension or expulsion. We also offer training and consulting on using restorative approaches to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and accountability to those harmed. For schools partnering to change school climate, we offer training and coaching as well as direct services.
